Topeka's Dustin Hobbs holds up his first-place and big-fish plaques after winning the Kansas Crappie Trail singles event July 17 on Toronto Reservoir.

Dustin Hobbs made quite a splash at the Kansas Crappie Trail’s recent singles fishing tournament July 17 at Toronto Reservoir.

The Topekan posted 7.26 pounds — including the big fish of the tournament at 1.72 pounds — to take home the victory at the third singles event of the year, with just the singles state championship Sept. 25 on El Dorado Reservoir remaining in that division.

Hobbs bested second-place Lane Peterson, of Marion, by more than a half-pound (6.65 pounds), with Lawrence’s Mike Schrock not far behind in third place at 6.63 pounds. Rounding out the top five were fellow Lawrencian Jeremy Conway (6.53) and El Dorado’s Vince Coats (6.04).

Following the win, Hobbs leads the KCT singles season points race with 299 points, with Schrock in second with 294 and Conway third with 292. Topekan Todd Morstorf (283) and Eudora’s Dylan Faulconer (278) are fourth and fifth, respectively.

The next KCT team event will take place July 31 on Tuttle Creek Reservoir in Manhattan.
