Oakley ends Inman’s run
Oakley remembered what happened in Week 4.
Inman rolled into town and handed the Plainsmen a 39-13 drubbing but 10 weeks later, it was the Plainsmen who got their revenge.
Oakley beat Inman 9-0 to advance to their first ever state championship, ending Inman’s season at 8-3.
Oakley controlled possession all game long and made the Teutons pay on any mistake they made, including an opening drive interception that put the Plainsmen in good field position with 8:29 remaining in the first quarter.
Oakley marched down in eight plays, going more than eight minutes and it was a 22-yard field goal by Will Schmidt that put Oakley up 3-0 with 3:04 remaining in the first quarter.
Inman would turn it over on another interception but it was their defense that kept them in the game. Their ability to bend but not break in the first half kept the halftime score at 3-0.
Inman shot themselves in the foot with penalties after holding Oakley inside their own five to start the second half.
The Teutons never really mustered too much in terms of offense for the game. Their best drives were two of their final drives of the night. They drove down and turned it over on downs with 7:42 remaining in the third that ended with two good looks on passing plays, with one off the finger tips.
Then, they drove down and missed a 33-yard field goal with 11:53 remaining in the game.
That’s when Oakley put the game out of reach. Hunter Scheck piled up 45 yards on an 80-yard march to the season. Scheck capped it off with a 1-yard touchdown run to make the game 9-0 with 3:04 remaining.
Doerksen threw his third interception on the last opportunity with 51 seconds remaining in the contest.
Inman’s Kendyn Blank finished with 72 yards on seven carries unofficially. The Teutons finished with 160 yards of total offense, while holding Oakley to 222 yards.
Doerksen finished with a school record with 1,554 yards passing on 92 of 145. He also threw for 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also ran for 241 yards on 63 carries.
Blank’s season ends with 766 yards on 87 carries and 11 touchdowns. Freshman Tanner Heckel finished with 447 yards and eight touchdowns on 53 carries.
The Plainsmen dominated time of possession, holding it for almost 30 minutes.
