Augusta struggles in opening loss

AUGUSTA – Turnovers and penalties were the name of the game for the Augusta Orioles in their season opener as Coffeyville Field-Kindley beat the Orioles 35-14 on Friday night.

Field Kindley scored the game’s first 28 points, including a 76-yard touchdown on a screen pass by Kansas State commit, Darell Jones in the third quarter that put the game away for the Golden ‘Nado.

Augusta forced a turnover in the first quarter, giving the Orioles great field position on their second position. However, two plays later junior Hunter Anderson would fumble it forward and Jones would return it for good field position for Field indley.

Ethan Camp would punch it in on an 11-yard touchdown run, to get the first score of the game and it put the Orioles on their heels for the rest of the game.

After a big run by Duke Lichlyter was called back by a penalty, the Orioles were once again put behind the sticks and were forced to punt.

Field Kindley struck gold again when Aaron Rutherford found Tariq Wilson a short pass, and Wilson took it the rest of the way for a 67-yard touchdown pass with 4:53 to go in the second quarter and the 14-0 lead for the ‘Nado.

The damage was done when Camp broke through two tacklers and ran it in for a 22-yard touchdown with 2:33 to go in the half.

Field Kindley led 21-0 at the break.

On their first possession of the second half, Field Kindley scored on a 76-yard screen pass from Rutherford to Jones to make it 28-0 with 10:55 to go in the third quarter.

It was how it went for the Orioles.

Hunter Anderson scored on a 3-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and Ryan Andrews had a 9-yard run of his own for a score in the fourth quarter. However, Camp had a 70-yard run with under six minutes to go in the fourth quarter to seal any chance of an Augusta comeback.

Augusta will host county rival El Dorado in Week 2 in hopes of getting their first win of the season.
