Salina Central too much for Trojan girls

Alana Shetlar of Andover (21) challenges Salina Central's Chaliscia Samilton (40) in Friday's contest in the Central gym.

SALINA — A 12-2 run and a 9-0 run in the second and third quarters proved to be a difference maker for Salina Central against Andover Friday night.

The Trojans gave the Mustangs fits early, but Central cruised to a 57-29 victory to improve to 5-1 on the season and 3-1 in Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Division II play. Andover fell to 2-5 and 1-3 in AVCTL-II.

"Early on we kind of had our composure a little bit on offense," Andover coach Seth Anderson said. "Defensively, we just didn't have any physical effort in the second half. (In) the first half, we had some shots that were falling.

"Central came out in the second half and went on that early run, and that pretty much put an end of the game."

The Trojans were neck and neck with the Mustangs through the first five-and-a-half minutes before Central found its touch with a 3-pointer by Aubrie Kierscht to give the Mustangs a 10-5 advantage with 3:19 left in the first quarter. Central led by as many as seven in the period en route to an 18-9 lead after eight minutes.

Andover pulled within five early in the second, but Central's first big run of the game extended it out to 32-18 at halftime.

The 9-0 Mustang run in the third was anchored by Landry Stewart, who scored 15 of her game-high 17 points in the second half. Central extended the lead to as many as 32 in the fourth quarter to trigger a running clock.

Brooke Walker led Andover with 13 points on the evening going 6 of 9 from the field.

"She played alright," Anderson said. "She a tough defender guarding her. She got some points.

"She made have had 13 points, but she had an off night. I think that's the credit to the defense (Central) plays."

Andover will continue its two-game road swing with a 6 p.m. tip Tuesday night against Maize.
