Letter to the editor: Masks are a necessity
If you want to avoid another shutdown and unemployment without the extra $600, wear your mask and social distance when you can. Remember this, if we have another shut down the blame will be on those who cried foul and department stores who served those without masks. Period!
The city mask ordnance that was passed went way short of what it was intended for. To fix this, you need to go directly after the store owners who let people in without a mask, which would eliminate the massive phone calls to the police department and the many excuses of “I can't wear one.”
It would work the same way as the city ordnance that took effect in Salina on the smoking ban and before it became a nationwide law. Bars and store owners said they we going to lose business, they never lost a dime along with the bars. The threat by the public that they would go to another city. Never happened.
I recall an incident at the time when the Labor Building on Ohio had a bar in the basement and was turned in by someone for letting their customers smoke. The city retaliated by closing that bar down for several days I believe. It made front page of the Salina Journal.
The city should start out with warnings and then fines for the store owners and increase each time they fail to comply. This sign needs to be updated: No shoes, no shirt, no service to no shoes, no shirt, no mask, no service.
