Third time might be the charm for the Andover Trojans.
On Monday, the Week 5 game against 6A’s Haysville Campus has been canceled according to USD 261 due to COVID-19 quarantine requirements.
It is the second time the schedule for the Trojans has been altered. Originally, they were scheduled to play Wichita Heights. However, the USD 259 school board chose initially to postpone the fall sports seasons due to the gating policies. The day before that, USD 259’s athletic director, J. Means had announced the city league would only play each other, canceling the game against Heights.
Shortly after, Andover made the decision to play Campus, as their game against a Wichita team had been canceled, making it the easy choice in terms of scheduling.
According to Campus school district, who is an AVCTL-I team, "Due to USD 261 District Covid-19 quarantine requirements, the upcoming varsity football games between Campus vs Maize South (9/25) and Campus vs Andover (10/4) will not be played."
For now, the Trojans are left with only seven games on their schedule with the opening. They will look to fill the game but the options may be limited.
While most schools have chosen to play football in some form, as Wichita is only playing the city league schools, the abrupt cancellations in high school football this season are quite common, with schools in all classes throughout the state canceling games to keep safe.
This becomes the second game canceled by COVID-19 as a player on Andover Central tested positive and the Jaguars and Buhler chose not to play their Week 2 showdown.
Currently, Andover is 2-1 with back-to-back wins over Arkansas City (21-0) and Salina Central (35-6). They play at Goddard Eisenhower on Friday, Sept. 25.
After Derby was required to quarantine on Monday afternoon, the Hutchinson Salthawks are could be open.
Other teams that are currently open during Week5: 6A’s Blue Valley North and Hays.
We’ll continue to update this as teams come available.
