ROSE HILL KANSAS - It was a cold night in Rose Hill as the Rose Hill Rockets took flight and shutout the Independence Bulldogs in a 45-0 win.
The Rockets started out their drive from their own 39-yard line and went out on their opening drive with a 33-yard run in for a touchdown giving them the opening score, 7-0.
The Rockets defense would hold Independence to a three-and-out.
Trenton Barnhart would run for 17 yards but would fumble a couple plays later giving Independence the ball at their own 28.
Penalties for Independence would start as a Sportsmanlike Conduct would be called and it didn’t stop there.
The Bulldogs would start to get things going in the second quarter, but an offensive pass interference would set them back and cost them a three and out.
The Rockets started out big as Barnhart ran for 24 yards stopping at the Bulldogs 39.
Couple plays later the Rockets would fumble again and was recovered by Independence starting their drive at their own 31.
Independence started the drive with a few first downs, but penalties still played a major factor as they would go for it on 4th and 2, but the Rockets defense took off and sacked Brayden Coller.
The Rockets responded after the sack with a 34-yard touchdown run.
The Bulldogs went three and out, as the Rockets drive methodically down the field with less than two minutes to go in the second quarter. Barnhart would find Spencer Nolan for a 17-yard touchdown that would extend the lead, 21-0.
Independence started their 3rd quarter drive with a three and out.
The Rockets would turn over the football for the 4th time as they fumbled and picked up by the Bulldog defense.
As the Bulldogs was looking for some daylight, Coller threw an interception to the Rockets, but the Rockets defender fumbled the ball and give it right back to Independence offense at the 27-yard line.
Independence penalties would force a three and out on the short possession.
“They had a lot of unsportsmanlike conducts and things like that, our kids didn’t get to trapped in that little mess,” Head Coach Lee Weber said.
The Rockets took their time on the field running the clock down to end the 3rd quarter starting with a 3rd and goal at the 3-yard line.
The Rockets couldn’t get it done on 3rd down but David Leck would punch in for a Rockets touchdown beginning of the 4th quarter, extending their big lead, 28-0.
The Rockets continued their scoring ways as back to back pass to Kobi Campbell would get himself a touchdown with seven minutes to go in the fourth quarter, 35-0.
The Rockets didn’t get in the red on their next drive, but Trystan Spiess would get a 37-yard field goal, extending the shutout lead, 38-0.
The Bulldogs wanted to put some points on the scoreboard, but it would be intercepted by the Rockets defense with two minutes to go in the fourth quarter.
“I thought our defense played really well, put them in a couple bad spots and some turnovers and they came out and played,” Weber said.
The Rockets didn’t take mercy on the bulldogs as they would end the night with one last touchdown, shutting out Independence, 45-0.
“We enjoy getting out of our league, our league is tough, and we play outside of our league and you can see the talent of our kids have,” Weber said.
The Rockets will travel to Goddard in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs.
