The 2019 Girl’s Tennis season kicked off with an Invitational at Independence High School on Saturday, Aug. 31. Circle won the Invitational in convincing fashion.
Circle beat out Winfield with 16 points to win the tournament. El Dorado was fourth with nine points.
“Weather cooperated for us,” Circle head coach Cran Chase said. “This is always a fun tournament to do. I’m glad we did really well.”
The Thunderbirds would take three of the four first place finishes. Circle junior Annabelle Adams won No. 1 singles dominating her five matches. Only one match was within three games.
“I was anticipating Annabelle to do real well,” Cran Chase said.”
Junior Lanna Chase also went 4-0. Chase had a couple of close calls as Winfield’s MaKenna Roark and Spring Hill’s Alyssa Sherron pushed her to a 14th game. Junior Adisyn Cornali and junior Bridget Lindberg also went undefeated, 5-0, to win No. 2 doubles.
For the Wildcats, it was No. 1 doubles Mallory Parsons and Makayla Chalbot went 4-1 to finish second for the Wildcats. “
I was pleased with both our competitiveness and conditioning as we played five matches,” El Dorado head coach Kent Kunkel said. El Dorado’s freshman Rylie Ball went 2-3 in his first varsity matches. Nalea Payton went 2-3 but ran into some tough luck as she was leading in two of her three matches she dropped.
The next action for El Dorado will be on Thursday, Sept. 5 as they travel to Winfield for another invitational. For Circle, they’ll host Andover, Haven and Nickerson in a quad on Thursday as well.
El Dorado and Circle will meet up the Circle Invitational on Sept. 12. Andover Central and Augusta will be the other two Butler County schools competing in the invitational.
