Augusta and McPherson split a doubleheader on Thursday at Augusta High School. Both teams battled through cold, windy conditions as the Orioles earned a walk-off victory in game one by a score of 13-12. In game two, the Bullpups got their revenge with a dominant 9-1 victory. The Orioles are now 7-5, while the Bullpups are 4-8. Augusta will travel to El Dorado next Thursday, while McPherson will head to Circle.
Game 1 - Augusta 13, McPherson 12
Game one was a back-and-forth affair that featured many ties and lead changes. The Orioles struck first in the bottom of the first inning. Gavin Payne hit a double to left field to score the Orioles’ first run of the game. The Orioles had plenty of baserunners in the first two innings, but stranded three runners in the first and two in the second.
In the top of the third, McPherson’s Spencer Whitfield hit a sacrifice fly to score Jakob Feel to tie the game at 1.
McPherson scored two runs on two Augusta errors in the top of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. The Bullpups’ lead was short-lived as the Orioles scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to go back on top. After a strikeout to start the inning, the Orioles put together four straight hits. Augusta executed a double steal to go up 4-3.
In the fifth inning, both teams scored two runs. In the top of the inning, McPherson freshman Tytin Goebel hit a double to score Spencer Whitfield and Aiden Hoover. With no outs and runners on second and third, Augusta’s Austin Gray came in and threw three strikeouts to end McPherson’s momentum.
In the bottom of the fifth, Augusta’s Tyler Kohls scored from third on a McPherson error. Austin Gray followed with an RBI single to score Zac Burton and give Augusta a 6-5 lead.
Spencer Whitfield hit an RBI double for the Bullpups in the top of the sixth, tying the game at 6.
In the bottom of the sixth, Tyler Kohls knocked in two runs with a two-out double. After two straight walks, Colin Hiser drove in two more runs with a single to put the Orioles up 10-6.
McPherson refused to go away quietly. The Bullpups exploded for six runs In the top of the seventh inning to take a two-run lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.
Jaren Jackson led off with a walk. Gavin Payne followed with a single, and Ely Wilcox hit an RBI single to score Jackson. Tyler Kohls reached first on an error, which scored the tying run. Two batters later, with two outs, a pitch got past the McPherson catcher and rolled to the backstop, while Augusta’s Ely Wilcox scored from third for the game-winning run.
McPherson’s Tytin Goebel led the Bullpups with four hits and four RBIs. Augusta’s Gavin Payne finished with three hits.
Ely Wilcox started on the mound for the Orioles and pitched the first four innings. Austin Gray pitched two and one-third innings in relief and struck out six batters. Jaren Jackson closed the game and got the final two outs.
Game 2 - McPherson 9, Augusta 1
In game two, the Orioles scored the first run of the game, but McPherson would go on to outscore the Orioles 9-0 in the final six innings fora 9-1 victory. McPherson’s Aiden Hoover gave up just three hits in seven innings. The Bullpup offense finished with 12 hits, led by Kourtney Craig with three hits.
