The Augusta softball team has not trailed their opponent in many games this year, but the Orioles were forced to rally against the Bullpups on Thursday night. Augusta secured the sweep and remains undefeated thanks to a late rally in game two. The Orioles earned a 13-3 run-rule victory in game one, before winning game two by a score of 11-7. The Orioles improve to 12-0 with the sweep, and will face El Dorado on the road next Thursday. McPherson falls to 4-10 and will travel to Circle next Thursday.
Game 1 - Augusta 13, McPherson 3
The Orioles scored early and often in game one. After one inning, Augusta led 6-0. At the end of the third inning, the Orioles had built a 13-0 lead. The Bullpups scored all three of their runs in the top of the fifth inning, but it was not enough to stay in the game as the Orioles were able to secure a run-rule victory.
Gracie Johnston earned the win for the Orioles, giving up four hits, while striking out eight batters in five innings. Bailey Pennycuff led the way with four hits. Martinique Merz drove in four runs for the Orioles.
Game two was much more exciting, as the Orioles were forced to rally in order to pull out the victory. Heading into the fifth inning, McPherson held on to a 3-1 lead. In the top of the fifth inning, the Bullpups opened up their lead by adding four more runs to go up 7-1. Ariana Potter singled to score two runs, and Taylor Bruce doubled to score two more to put the Bullpups up 7-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Orioles began to claw their way back into the game and found some life offensively. Kourtney Divine hit an RBI single to get things started. After a walk brought in another run, Cheyenne Pohlmann singled to score a run and Bailey Pennycuff doubled to bring in two more.
With the game tied at 7 in the bottom of the sixth, Jadyn Jackson sparked the Orioles four-run inning with a lead-off solo home run. At the end of the sixth, Augusta led 11-7. In the top of the seventh, Augusta’s Bailey Pennycuff made a huge play in centerfield, going back to the fence to make an impressive catch to keep the Bullpups from scoring. Gracie Johnston finished the game with a strikeout for the third and final out.
Kourtney Divine led the Orioles with three hits and two RBIs. Bailey Pennycuff drove in three runs for the Orioles.
