The McPherson girls basketball team grinded out a road win over a tough Augusta team by a score of 40-28 on Tuesday night at Augusta High School.
Augusta held the Bullpups scoreless for most of the first quarter, while jumping out to a 5-0 lead midway through the first quarter. By the end of the quarter, McPherson finished with just two field goals, and Augusta held onto a 7-5 lead as both teams struggled to make shots in the first eight minutes.
Emma Ruddle quickly tied the game at 7 early in the second quarter. Augusta responded with a quick 7-0 run to go up 14-7. McPherson caught fire in the final minutes of the first half, and closed the half on a 12-0 run. Grace Pyle scored the final seven points of the first half to help the Bullpups take a 19-14 into the locker room at the half.
The Orioles were were without senior guard Jayden Marlnee for much of the first half due to two quick fouls which put her on the bench.
McPherson carried their momentum into the second half as they continued to build off of their first-half run and scored the first 10 points of the second half to go up 29-14. The Bullpups’ full-court pressure forced several turnovers and helped expand their lead.
Augusta was able to cut the Bullpup lead to ten points at the end of the third quarter, as McPherson took a 31-21 lead into the fourth quarter.
McPherson was able to hold off the Orioles in the final quarter as Augusta was unable to cut the Bullpups’ lead to single digits and McPherson pulled out the 40-28 victory.
Jayden Marlnee led the Orioles with 9 points. Abbe Rhodes added seven points.
The Bullpups were led by Grace Pyle with 11 points. Emma Ruddle and Lakyn Schieferecke both finished with 8.
Augusta falls to 4-3 on the season, with all three of their losses coming to teams ranked in the top five in 4A and 5A. The Orioles will travel to Winfield (4-3) on Friday, Jan. 11.
McPherson improves to 7-1 and will host El Dorado (0-8) on Friday.
