Augusta had no trouble with AVCTl-III rival El Dorado as the Orioles improved to 4-2 on the year with a 54-28 road win on Friday night.

Both teams struggled to find any rhythm offensively at the start of the contest. After three scoreless minutes, Jayden Marlnee finally put the Orioles on the board with a steal and a layup at the 5:00 mark. Marlnee would go on to finish with eight points as the Orioles took a 16-9 lead after the first quarter. The Wildcats were held scoreless for the first five minutes of the game, before Brooklyn Motter started to heat up and scored seven points in the final three minutes of the opening quarter.

Augusta’s defense looked solid in the second quarter, holding the Wildcats to just seven points to expand their lead to 29-16.

El Dorado cut Augusta’s lead to 10 early in the second half, before the Orioles opened up a big lead with a 13-3 run. Augusta dominated the boards for the remainder of the quarter and took a 44-24 lead into the final quarter.

Augusta’s defense looked dominant once again in the final quarter, as the Orioles held El Dorado to just four points and continued to build on their lead in the closing minutes for a 54-28 road victory.

Augusta’s Jayden Marlnee finished with a game-high 18 points. Abbee Rhodes was also in double figures with 12 points for the Orioles. Maybe Anderson added 9 points off of the bench.

Hailey Eaton led El Dorado with seven points, followed by Kenzie Eaton with six points.

Augusta has already played three top-ten teams and will face another tough test on Tuesday, Jan. 8 as they host McPherson, the defending 4A-I state champions. McPherson is 5-1 and is the No. 5 team in 5A.

El Dorado falls to 0-7 with the loss and will travel to Buhler (2-3) on Tuesday.
