So, here we are, folks. The culmination of the New Republican Party deciding decades ago to dismiss, disparage, discredit and discourage science and instead ally with the religious and radical right. Their fearless, witless and brainless Leader suggests we “ingest” disinfectant and get magical light rays “through our skin.”

Science also means knowledge. What his supporters want to impose on the rest of us are their beliefs, however irrational we happen to find them. Moderate Republicans like our own former Sen. Kassebaum have been left behind. I remember moderate Republican Sen. Elizabeth Dole asking in the 1990s, “When did the religious right start telling Republicans what to do and say”?

Well, in the 1980s is when, and it just keeps getting worse. So they deny climate change, environmental regulation and even an pandemic. What do experts know anyway?! One hundred years after the Scopes Trial, we’re still fighting about evolution.

Although the recent unmasked and closely packed gun-toting protesters at state capitals might just be survival of the fittest Darwinism in action. More than 100 years after women could even learn about contraception, we’re still fighting about that, too.
