Thomas Fermond O'Brien

Thomas Fermond O'Brien was born January 25, 1949, in Chardon, Ohio, to Thomas Jefferson and Norma Jean (Riffe) O'Brien and grew up in Newbury, Ohio, where he met and married Cathy G. Kirk.

Tom was a decorated US Army combat veteran who served in Vietnam.

Tom enjoyed outdoor sports and hobbies, reading, and watching TV. He taught his sons to hunt, fish, and fix things. He tried to teach his daughter, but she preferred to stay inside reading.

Tom could spin a tall tale about anything—his childhood, his military service, his travels, the time his beloved boxer Maggie opened his car door and caused a minor crash in the Walmart parking lot. Some tales, though, he tried to avoid telling, like the tragic hooking of his young grandson Andrew's ear during a family fishing trip, which could have been avoided had Tom just given a 403rd warning not to walk behind him while he cast his line.

He also loved to compete with his grandchildren for who could tell the best (or is it worst?) "groaners" (jokes and puns). During his later years, he loved to play Phase 10, Dirty Pool, and You Blew It every morning with his bestie Cathy.

Tom did not want a funeral. We hope he was joking when he told us to throw his ashes out the car window on the way home from the mortuary, but we know he was completely serious when he said it wouldn't matter to him because he wouldn't be there. Four years ago, he gave his heart to Jesus Christ, so we know he is in heaven, and we who are Christ followers will see him again.

Tom died peacefully at home on September 18, 2021. He was preceded in death by his father Tom. He is survived by his mother Norma of Newbury, Ohio, sisters Sharon Mull of Newbury, Ohio, Kathy (Jack) Nordyke of Mentor, Ohio, and Connie Danielson of Alabama, brother Scott (Sandy) O'Brien of Southington, Ohio, sons Tom O'Brien and Lonnie O'Brien of El Dorado, John (Stacy) O'Brien of Sugar Grove, Illinois, Joshua (Karissa) O'Brien of Hurst, Texas, daughter Merideth (Tim) Baker of El Dorado, his grandchildren Andrew (Fateme), Victoria (Brooks), Caitlin (Josh), Ethan, Timmy, Michael, Elizabeth, Connor, Abigail, and Parker, and his great-grandchildren Arienette and Audrey.
