Joan, retired teacher with Augusta schools, passed away May 12, 2020 at the age of 76. Joan was born in Norfolk, VA to Helen and Bruce Madden.


She is preceded in death by her parents and her youngest son Jon Stephens.


Joan was a doer, an extraordinary teacher; mother, friend, and above all a person who helped make the future better. She was a solid influence on hundreds of middle school children in the Augusta school system for which she will long be remembered. Joan was a skillful seamstress and gardener. Joan graduated from South High School in 1961; she graduated from Arkansas State University and earned a master of education as well. Joan taught in the International School in Saudi Arabia for two years. Joan will be missed and most remembered for her smile and her exquisite sense of style.


She is survived by her husband Lyle, her son Gary Stephens and her grandson Skyler Stephens, brother Robert Madden, sisters Sharon Leinbach, Carol Cumberland and Marie Hampton. Joan had many step children, step grandchildren, nieces and nephews that she loved dearly. Joan was fortunate to have had the outstanding team of care givers at Comfort Care Homes.
