Elaine Calvert passed away early Thursday morning, May 14, 2020. She was 87 years old and lived at Cumbernauld Village for the past two years.
Elaine was born March 20, 1933, in Gray, Oklahoma to Elmer and Erma (Eastman) Cook. She was the middle child of three. Elmer’s job took the family to Tennessee for many years. When Elaine was 14, her father passed away from kidney failure, and her mother settled back in Winfield, Kansas. Elaine attended and graduated from Winfield, High School. She then studied education at Emporia State, but after a year, decided to go back to Winfield to marry her love and life partner. C.R. (Bud) Calvert and Elaine were united in marriage on February 7, 1954. They were a dynamic duo for over 66 years working together raising a family, partnering in many business endeavors, and working on home improvement projects. They lived in Colorado much of their lives, and she loved the mountains. She approached life with a steady grace, a surprising wit and entertaining sense of humor.
Elaine would tell you that her greatest joy and accomplishment was her family. She was a devoted daughter, loving sister, amazing wife and awesome mother. If someone wanted to write a guide on being an excellent mom, they could use Elaine as a stellar example. She had three children of her own, but loved children and cared for many throughout her life. She was the best “cheerleader” anyone could ask for, and she put in countless hours of seat time watching, cheering, and whistling encouragement in sports, concerts, plays, and speeches. Many times, she knew the words, moves, and plays as well as her kids did! As her family matured, she was always a very positive, supportive presence loving her family through many challenges.
Other accomplishments included her time as a sponsor for the Miss Winfield Pageant, teaching and guiding the Participants in on-stage presence. She did modeling herself many times throughout her life, and was a buyer, (and behind the scenes manager) of The Calvert Department stores in Kansas. She loved her crafting and loved collecting natural materials and creating beautiful wreaths and centerpieces to sell. Gardening was a passion she said she would pursue more in Heaven! She had brains and beauty. Probably her biggest job in life was being the “straight man” for Bud and “trying to keep him in line!” She secretly enjoyed and reflected upon his crazy antics throughout their life together.
She is survived by her husband, Bud; daughter, Cindy Calvert and husband Daniel Danner; son Kent and his wife Trish; her brother Larry Cook; her sister Norma Fogarty and her husband, Larry; and her grandchildren, Kelly Hadfield, Christopher Calvert, Casey Andree, Annie Calvert, and Claire Calvert.
Elaine has joined all of her loved ones including her parents, her son, Craig, and her sister-in-law, Pat Cook in Heaven.
