Memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018 at St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church, 123 N. Andover Rd., Andover, with Father Kent Hemberger presiding. Interment will follow at Lakeview Cemetery, Wichita.
Gary was born in Troy, Kan. on May 31, 1938 and enjoyed many summers in his youth spent on the farm with his Aunt Ruby and Uncle Vic. Gary moved to the Southern California when he was 21, where he started his career at the Southern California Automobile Club. While working his way up the ranks in the company he married and started a family having two children, Kim and Brad. In 1984 he met Elaine Mittelstaedt and they married on Dec. 28, 1985, adding her two daughters, Monica and Malissa to the family. Together they spent the next 30+ years as a family. Gary found his calling in construction and facilities management for the Auto Club of Southern California. Upon retirement in 1995 Gary and Elaine moved to Kansas. Gary never knew a stranger and Elaine affectionately called him Mr. Congeniality and to him Elaine was his home, so much so that her phone number was titled Home on his cell phone. Gary and Elaine treasured their road trips and even while he was ill they got to mark a tour of the New England states off of their bucket list. He was a man who always saw things as black and white, right or wrong and would always tell you what he thought. Gary would be the first to lend a helping hand or give advice. To many family members and friends Gary was the “Rock” they could always depend on. While a rock to many he still had a soft sweet side which showed each time he would pick out a greeting card for Elaine; no one knows how many cards he read in total before finding just the right one for his “Babe”. He loved tinkering and fixing things especially in his rental properties and never passed up a garage sale where he would find tools and always a bargain or two. In his later years fishing became his passion along with spending time at the lake. He enjoyed time with his family and loved being called “Popi” by all of his grandchildren. He loved to sing silly made up songs and play pranks on the grandchildren. But what the grandchildren loved best was spending time with him alone in his work shop or building things. Sometimes Popi would get hurt, so he kept a toy doctors kit so the kids could fix a finger in need.
Gary is survived by: his wife Elaine; children, Kim Evans-Chates (Howard), Brad Evans, Monica Shapiro (Martin) and Malissa Burghardt (Roger); siblings, Keith Evans (Judy) and Jeanette Lies (Gene); grandchildren, Alison Ivens (Tim), Jessica Ritchie, Moriah Ritchie, Lauren Barratti, Payton Ritchie, Corbin Barratti, Jeremy Burghardt and Erica Shapiro; nieces and nephews, Michelle Massey, Brock Evans, Kirk Lies and Ryan Evans; his beloved dog Roxy and cat Lizzy; and many other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father Kenneth Cutsinger, and mother LaVilla Cutsinger.
