The Garden Gate Garden Club has selected 2316 Star Street, the home of Steve and Judy Shyrock, as the July yard of the month for the town of Augusta.

Transforming this property into a garden oasis has been a labor of love for more than 40 years. Graced with tall shade trees and a lush variety of shrubs, perennials, annuals, potted plants and seating areas, this yard invites the visitor to sit and enjoy the natural beauty of a shady garden.

A lovely winding cobblestone and brick path flanked by ‘Green Velvet’ boxwoods leads past dappled willows and white abelias and a stone bench nestled amongst peonies and yellow daylilies. A wooden garden gate enters into a shaded backyard lawn with graceful curving beds filled with lush plantings of ferns, hydrangeas, holly, hosta, mint and tall phlox. Naturalized violets, virginia creeper and English ivy are amongst the plants creating a natural looking groundcover that thrive in the shade of the arching trees. Red begonia and white impatiens provide little splashes of color and a friendly wooden gate leads into the neighboring yard.

A large patio provides a seating area and space for potted ferns and hibiscus and even a galvanized water tank holding tall feather reed grass. The sound of a splashing water fountain cools the air on a muggy late afternoon.

Steve and Judy Shyrock have worked together to create a lovely garden that compliments them both. Steve Shyrock’s love of shrubs and perennials and Judy Shyrock’s interest in potted plants and annuals combine in harmony.
