Mears guilty of charges
Wichita Police Captain Kevin Mears was charged with battery, a Class B misdemeanor and disorderly conduct, a Class C misdemeanor earlier this year after he was accused of shoving a teen referee during an Augusta youth basketball game in January.
Mears was placed on unpaid administrative leave following the accident that was captured on video at the game in Augusta and showed Mears appearing to shove a 17-year-old referee before walking off the court with his injured son.
An Augusta municipal court judge found Mears guilty of the charges on Tuesday.
Sentencing included a $300 fine for battery, $150 for disorderly conduct and six months of non-reporting probation.
Following the ruling, Mears reportedly told television news crews that he planned to appeal the decision.
