Members of the El Dorado Prairie Port grant selection committee presented this year’s grant recipient, El Dorado Main Street, Inc., with a check for $2,000 to be used to forward the purchase of a sound system. Main Street Director Emily Connell said the system will be used by Main Street for their events throughout the year and will be available for other El Dorado community organizations.
The El Dorado Prairie Port Fund is one of several Funds administered by the El Dorado Community Foundation (ECF). Following the presentation, ECF board member Darrell Whitney shared some background about the Prairie Port Festival, which was a very successful event in El Dorado for 25 years. The festival, which ran Thursday through Sunday, started in the early 1990s and grew to about 35 events. It was managed by a committee of about 30 members who met year-round. When the festival closed in 2010, the assets of the organization were sold, and the proceeds were used to fund the Prairie Port Fund. Each year, the Prairie Port Selection Committee accepts applications for grants to groups needing funds to start events in the El Dorado community.
ECF was established in March 2014 and is an affiliate of the Central Kansas Community Foundation, located in Newton. The purpose of ECF is to assist donors in building permanent endowments for a broad range of existing and future educational and charitable needs in the El Dorado community.
