Jeanne Pierce

AUGUSTA - Jeanne Carlie Pierce, 75, of Augusta, KS, passed away Thursday, January 6, 2022 at home. Visitation 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Thursday, January 13, 2022 and service 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 14, 2022, both at Headley Funeral Chapel, Augusta, KS. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery Augusta, KS. Jeanne was born in Pierce City, MO on December 22, 1946. She grew up in Peabody, KS. She was Para Educator at Bluestem for 9 years and had also worked at Dillons and Griggs Farmers Market for many years. Jeanne loved spending time with her grandkids, crafting, mowing her yard, and shopping at Hobby Lobby and Michaels. On April 28, 1973 she married Edward Pierce in Augusta, KS. He preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her mother, Virginia Shank; father, Eugene Preston Reynolds; step father, Andy Shank. She is survived by: daughters, Jennifer Pittman and husband Tom of Augusta, KS, Cindy Defore and husband John of Augusta, KS; son, Kevin Pierce of Augusta, KS; brother, Mike Reynolds and wife Carol of Peabody, KS; sisters, Glenna Sattler and husband Edward of Peabody, KS, Andrea Kessner and husband Steve of Cedar Rapids, IA; grandchildren, Tommy, Bren, Canon, Chance, Drake, and Kaylyn; and many nieces and nephews. www.headleyfuneralchapel.com

Robert “Bob” Turner

EL DORADO - Robert “Bob” Turner’s life began on May 11, 1927 in Welda, KS; the son of Grover and Nora (Ballard) Turner. He served his country in the United States Army before retiring from a 35 year career as a pipefitter at the Skelly and Getty El Dorado Refinery. Bob was united in marriage to Hazel Demo on June 1, 1950 in Towanda, KS. He enjoyed coon hunting, fishing, gardening, raising Blue Tick dogs and mowing. Bob enjoyed watching football on the television, reading a good book and spending time with his family and friends. Bob’s family includes his children, Toni Finuf of Wichita, Stacy (Susan) Turner of El Dorado, Greta (Dean) Taft of El Dorado; grandchildren Shea Walter, Shanna Dempsey, Dustin Turner, Sara Nold, Justin Laymon, Sheena Debita and Erica Pickett and 9 great grandchildren. Bob passed away on January 6, 2022 at his home in El Dorado. He is preceded in death by his wife, Hazel, 2 brothers, 2 sisters and his parents. Friends may gather with the family from 5-7pm on Thursday, Jan 13 at Carlson Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held on Friday, January 14 at 11am at Sunset Lawns Cemetery in El Dorado. Phillip Drake Jimenez

EL DORADO - Phillip was born on October 27, 1948 to the parents of Brigido Reyes Jimenez and Bessie Geneace Osborne Jimenez at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He married Karen Sue Caywood on January 8, 1970 in Junction City, Kansas. Before then, he served in Vietnam with the 1st infantry division, known as “The Big Red One” from February 20, 1968 to February 17, 1971. He was glad to serve his country. While serving in the Army, he received the National Defense service medal, Vietnam service medal, two Purple Hearts, O/S bar, combat infantryman badge, Vietnam campaign medal, Vietnam Gallantry Cross with a bronze star medal. He was also an expert sharpshooter with (M-14), a marksman (M-16) and expert (M-60). He completed education and training with code of conduct, Geneva Convention, and military justice. These were the honors he received during his service. He received an Honorable discharge as Private First Class Jimenez. His dynamic professionalism and selfless courage contributed to saving friendly lives and contributed to the successful outcome of the encounter. Private First Class Jimenez showed an outstanding display of aggressiveness, devotion to duty and personal bravery in keeping with the finest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the First Infantry Division and the United States Army. He earned all of that for heroism in connection with military operations against hostile force serving as a driver of an armored personnel carrier with his company. After two rocket-propelled grenades disabled his track he braved the enemy fusillade and moved several casualties out of the armored vehicle then he climbed up to the top of the track using his machine gun raiding into the enemy. During the time in the service, he was injured in his neck.

Kathlyn Helmer

AUGUSTA - Kathlyn’s life began on October 8, 1948 in El Dorado, KS; the daughter of Bobbie and Madlyn (Magers) Boucher. She graduated high school and was united in marriage to James B. Helmer, Sr. in May of 1977. Kathlyn loved animals, especially her cats. Growing up, she enjoyed raising her horses. She supported and loved Hickory Hollow Animal Refuge. Kathlyn loved to collect tchotchkes and enjoyed going to thrift stores and antique stores searching for her treasures. Kathlyn was always family oriented and loved her family dearly. Her loving family includes her children, James (Cynthia) Helmer Jr. of Wichita, Robert Helmer of Augusta, Matthew (Jennifer) Helmer of Abiline, KS, Mark Helmer of Augusta and Anna (Scott) Kowalk of Ohio; 16 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. Kathlyn passed away on January 4, 2022 at her home in Augusta. She is preceded in death by her husband, James and her parents. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, January 8 at 10am at Walnut Valley Memorial Park in El Dorado. Letha R. Walker

EL DORADO - Letha’s life began on September 8, 1927 in Kingman, KS; the daughter of Charles and Dorothy (Hess) Padfield. Letha grew up on the farm during the Depression and during the Kansas Dust Bowl, during which, she learned to be responsible and resourceful. Letha had a caring spirit and worked as a registered nurse. She was united in marriage to Elbridge Walker on April 27, 1949 in North Carolina. Letha enjoyed volunteering at Susan B. Allen Hospital-serving over 29 years as a Sewing Saint. She also enjoyed birdwatching and reading. Her greatest joy was her family, which includes her children; James Walker of New Braunfels, TX, Stephen (Adah) Walker of El Dorado and Julie (Charles) Walker of El Dorado; grandchildren Jason, Aaron, Ryan and Zachary; great grandchildren Adeline, Carrigan and Reese; sister, Marilyn Jerauld of Pensacola, FL. Letha passed away on January 4, 2022 at her home in El Dorado. She is preceded in death by her husband, Elbridge, her parents and her brother, Ronald Padfield. Cremation has taken place and a private burial will take place in the spring. Memorial contributions in Letha’s name may be directed to the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Foundation. Connie S. Lane

Connie S. Lane, 59, passed away on Thursday December 30th 2021 surrounded by close family. She is preceeded in death by her father Billy McDaniel; mother Eunice McDaniel (Jennings); brother Gary McDaniel; and niece Amy McDaniel. She is survived by husband Kevin; her children: Nicholas, Joshua, and Lacey; three granddaughters; sisters: Marsha Jenkins and Ginger Gard. Viewing services will be held Thursday January 6th 5 to 8pm at Smith Family Mortuary in Derby, KS. Funeral services will be held on January 7th at 10am at Smith Family Mortuary. Graveside service at 2:30pm at McGonigle cemetery in Arcadia, KS. John M. Boccia

POTWIN - John’s life began on November 20, 1954, at Mt. Carmel Hospital in Pittsburg, KS. He was the son of C M and Norvella (Melton) Boccia. John graduated from Columbus Unified Schools in 1973. He was united in marriage to Katherine Johnson on November 8, 1974, at First Baptist Church in Carl Junction, MO. John worked most of his life as a machinist, first in local area shops and then Boeing/Spirit AeroSystems as a research and development machinist until his retirement in 2017. He was a member of the Potwin Christian Church and served on the Elder Board for over 20 years. John was a licensed glider pilot and flew (and crashed) his own ultralight aircraft. In his spare time he enjoyed gunsmithing and firearms as well as making brass miniatures. He was also well known for his sausage-making skills using the old family recipe. Family ties to West Mineral, KS kept John busy as he supported the preservation of Big Brutus (the retired electric shovel on which his father once worked) and was involved in helping to place his grandparents’ old grocery store in West Mineral on the National Register of Historic Places.

Richard Allen Hogoboom

EL DORADO - Richard Allen Hogoboom, of El Dorado, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, December 14, 2021 at the age of 77. Richard was born on September 27, 1944 in El Dorado, Kansas to John and Martha (Singleton) Hogoboom. Richard was well-known for his work in the oilfield as a contract pumper. He enjoyed his work so much that he would often rebuild oilfield tri- Plex pumps as a hobby. Richard had a passion for woodworking and he could build anything (wood or other materials as well). His last project was to build a woodburning stove on his own. He didn’t use any plans or blueprints, he just made it and it was absolutely perfect. He was a jack-of-all-trades, master of ALL. Richard also had a love for animals and the wild critters, and he enjoyed gardening. He was also a proud Army veteran, serving in the Army Reserves for several years, with basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Richard was a very caring son, father, grandfather, and great grandfather that will be deeply missed.

Katherine Lou (Johnson) Boccia

POTWIN - Kathy was born on May 28, 1955, to Wayne and Dorothy (Reis) Johnson in Joplin, Missouri. She graduated from Columbus Unified High School in Columbus, Kansas in 1973. She married John Michael Boccia on November 8, 1974 at the First Baptist Church in Carl Junction, Missouri.
