Kansas foster children are still sleeping in offices years after promises that would end
TOPEKA, Kansas — Foster children still regularly sleep in offices instead of homes despite the Kansas Department for Children and Families settling a lawsuit by agreeing to end the practice. In one case, an autistic child spent a month in an office because no foster home was available.
Poppy Day
On Saturday, May 28th, Ladies from the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 81 in El Dorado passed out Poppies on Friday and Saturday in recognition of Poppy Day. Poppy Day is celebrated in countries around the world.
United Way dispersing emergency housing funds
The United Way has taken the lead on distributing federal grant funds that have been available, but unused, for Butler County. The funding has been unused because there has not been an active local board to distribute it.
Andover announces kick-off of plan process
The City of Andover is launching a 10-year Comprehensive Plan process, with an eye on providing the community with a “compelling vision and plan” to guide decision-making and development. “In order to create a clear path to a successful plan, listening to the community will be paramount to help build consensus on what future growth means while preserving the city’s history, character, culture, and heritage,” stated Ronnie Price, Mayor of Andover.
Municipal Band marks 100th season
This El Dorado Municipal Band celebrate their 100th anniversary with the premier of “El Dorado Fanfare” and a past director’s concert June 2. El Dorado Fanfare was a commissioned piece, written by Tusla composer Ed Huckeby specifically for the El Dorado Municipal Band and the community of El Dorado.

On Saturday morning, May 28th, members of the American Legion Post 81 and Fred Priestly VFW Post 1174, as well as members of the community, placed markers and flags at the gravesites of veterans. On Monday, May 30th, a Memorial Day Program was held at 11 a.m.
