City of Gold Royalty Crowned

The Miss El Dorado Pageant was held Thursday night. The 2022 Court of Royalty was crowned and over $3,000 in cash scholarships were awarded.

Vanessa Whiteside, former Circle Highschool teacher, Wichita Eagle journalist and current author of One Delightful Life travel blog based in Wichita, recently debuted her first book,'100 Things to do in Wichita Before You Die,' in May and attended book signings around Wichita in September.

Two students from Circle High School and one from Flint Hills High School were among the two dozen from around the state of Kansas who performed at the sixth Kansas State Fair Forensics Showcase. The event held at the State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson last Thursday, September 15 and was sponsored by the Sterling College Forensics/Debate team. Forensics is competitive speaking and interpretation events. Students who had medaled at the State Forensics Championship Tournaments last May were invited to bring their award-winning performances to the State Fair audience. Representing Circle High School were Addi Scribner who performed her oration “On A Roll” and Abi Tucker who did a series of three poems. From Flint Hills High School was Kaily Gilman who performed a poetry piece entitled “Hugo Sprouts and the Strange Case of the Beans” by John Loren. “It was impressive to see so many strong performances,” said Sterling College Forensics Coach Ken Troyer who hosted the event. “Addi, Abi, and Kaily gave exceptionally strong, poised performances and represented themselves and their programs well. They are talented and could certainly continue performing and competing at the collegiate level.” First year Forensics Coach Ida Piper from Hugoton brought two showcase students as well as other students to the event. She had never been to the State Fair Forensics Showcase before and said, “I was impressed. This was a great event for me and my students to see a variety of quality forensics pieces and performances from across the state. I’m so glad we came, and I want to bring even more students next year.”

As the sponsor of the event Sterling College’s Forensics/Debate team was highlighted as having last year’s National Champion Novice Debater and being consistently named to the top 25 teams nationally.Offering competitive forensics scholarships commensurate with athletics scholarships, was also highlighted.

Leon Harvest Home Festival

The Leon Harvest Home Festival wrapped up on Saturday night on September 17. Following the parade, there was a great antique car show, dunk tank to sink your favorite (or least favorite) people, a craft show and live entertainment by Leon native, Rusty Rierson and The Classic Cowboys during the street dance.

City of Gold Fest

The City of Gold Fest began on Saturday, Sept. 17th with a kick-off party at Walter‘s Pumpkin Patch and Mud Volleyball with the El Dorado Chamber of Commerce. The Elks Lodge hosted Bingo and a Snowcone Social on Sunday, and the festival continues all this week through Saturday the 24th.
