What is humanity’s greatest need? One specific story, recorded in all three synoptic gospels (Luke 5:18–26: Matt 9:2–8; Mark 2:3–12), gives us a clear answer. In the story a man suffering from paralysis is lowered down from the roof of a home right in front of where Jesus is teaching. The man’s friends tear a hole in the roof so that they can place their powerless comrade before Jesus in hopes that he will be healed. Their efforts demonstrate incredible faith in the willingness and power of Jesus to physically heal their friend. But the friends, like all of us, are too quick to assume that the man’s greatest need was healing from paralysis.
