A doctor, clerk, legislature, mayor and more of Augusta

Harvey Daniel Hill was born in Delaware County, Ohio on July 20, 1839 to Caleb and Elizabeth Hill. He had just begun medical school when the Civil War began. He served in the 32nd Ohio regiment of volunteers. Seven months later he was transferred to the medical department in which he had charge over the government dispensary at Springfield, Ohio. At the end of the War, he re-entered medical school at Ann Arbor, Michigan and graduated in 1868. He married Mary E. Fookes and moved to Augusta just 2 years after the federal government established a treaty with the Osage Nation, opening this land to settlement. The land office was in Augusta at that time and the population was booming.

James Grant of Grant Drug Store

James Grant was born in Illinois in either 1873 or 1874 (records vary on the date). James came to Kansas as a young man and lived in Wichita before coming to Augusta in 1902. That same year on October 29th, he married Coral Zelma Keifer, a music teacher in Howard, Kansas.

The Gimlin family history

Elijah E. Gimlin was born in Tuscarawas County, Ohio on May 7, 1841 to Barnhart and Mary Gimlin. In 1858 he moved to Illinois and as a 20-year-old, Elijah enlisted in Company G, 41st Illinois Volunteer Infantry in July 1861 and served for 3 years. He was severely wounded at Jackson, taken prisoner and was held for a short time. Elijah completed his military service and mustered out on August 20, 1864 with a Distinguished Service Award. He received $8 per month as a pension for a gunshot wound to his left elbow.
