Chris’ father remarried and left for America, leaving Chris with his grandmother in Germany. He attended the public schools for 2 years. In 1848 when the revolution broke out in Germany, he and an uncle began a trip to America. Chris sustained a severe injury to his foot while attempting to board a wagon. It took several weeks to get to Antwerp, Belgium and at the end of another 2 weeks, they boarded a sailing vessel bound for New York. The voyage took 9 weeks, with 2 passengers dying during the voyage. After short funeral services were held, the bodies were committed to the deep. The ship was thrown off course by storms while the passengers were shut into the lower part of the vessel in darkness for several days. It was a harrowing ordeal.
