Augusta's new Walmart store to open June 12th

Construction is nearly complete on the new Walmart store in Augusta scheduled to open on June 12th.

Soon store associates will begin stocking shelves in preparation of the grand opening of the approximately 120,000 square-foot store that will feature a full line of groceries, including a bakery, deli and fresh produce section. There also will be an expanded garden center. There will also be the Walmart wide assortment of merchandise.

According to a release from Walmart, the new stores feature many energy-saving elements, part of the company’s overall efforts to reduce the total amount of energy used in stores and other operations. These features include LED lights in signage, freezer cases and the parking lot. This technology uses about 50 percent less energy than traditional lighting.

Augusta Walmart Manager Shannon Thummel advised that between 140 and 150 associates will be employed at the new locations and applications will start being accepted in mid-April.

Thummel also reported that the current Augusta Walmart store will close the evening before opening day of the new Walmart.
