Joan Marie Snyder

Joan Marie Snyder, 81, passed away February 20, 2022, at her winter home in Benson, AZ. Joan was born September 1, 1940 in El Dorado Kansas and grew up in rural Augusta.

Joan attended Tadlock school, Leon Grade School, Leon High School in 1958 and Butler County Junior College with an Associate Bachelor’s Degree in Home Economics in 1960.

Joan and her husband Gerald (Jerry), were married on May 29, 1960 at the El Dorado Methodist Church and have been married for 61 years. They lived in Eureka from 1961 to 1976 where Joan ran the Humpty Dumpty Nursey School. Joan and Jerry moved to Augusta in 1976 and ran the Augusta Floral Shop for many years.

Joan was a very active community member. She was on the boards of the Augusta Museum, Augusta Chamber of Commerce and BCCC Alumni Association. She was an active lifetime member of the Eureka and Augusta Lions Club, and served as the first women District Governor for Lion’s District 17N.

Joan was very creative and a talented craft maker. She enjoyed card making in retirement and made greeting cards with others to be shipped to service men and women overseas. Joan was active in genealogy and traveled doing research around the United States in early retirement. Joan has a collection of 150 years of family photographs and a collection of Winzer family histories that she shared widely. Joan is the author of a book on One Room School Houses in Kansas.

Joan was loved by friends and family. Joan will be remembered as a positive and caring person who always thought of her community, friends and family. Even through recent medical challenges, Joan always had hope and an extraordinary attitude.

Joan leaves her husband Gerald Snyder, of Augusta; daughter Cynthia Snyder of Topeka; daughter-in-law Carolyn Jones of Lawrence; grandson Michael Snyder of Park City; and nieces and nephews.

Joan was preceded in death by her beloved son, Kenneth Snyder, her parents Harold Winzer and Thelma Winzer, and brother Richard Winzer.

A private memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be set up at the Augusta Public Library.
