El Dorado City Manager David Dillner wasn’t expecting anything unusual when he checked his personal post office box recently, but what he found came as a surprise. Among his regular mail was an envelope addressed not to him, but to longtime El Dorado resident Virginia Ball.
“It looked important,” said Dillner. “I know Virginia, so I kept it and later ran into someone in town who told me she was actually waiting on the letter.”
The mix-up sparked an idea. Rather than simply returning the mail or dropping it off quietly, Dillner arranged to hand deliver it, along with several of her friends, to Ball in person.
When he arrived, Dillner explained the unusual situation and asked if she had ever used the same P.O. box he currently has. Virginia said she never had.
“Turns out I got some weird mail the other day,” said Dillner upon arriving to Ball’s home. “It’s my P.O. box, but it had your name on it.”
Ball was surprised and accepted the envelope, which turned out to be a birthday card from the White House.
Ball is one of El Dorado’s centenarians, having turned 100 this past April, a milestone that reflects a century of history and change. Among her many life experiences, one stands out: She worked as a riveter during World War II, contributing to the war effort during a defining era for the nation.
“All the things that have happened during her lifetime are kind of amazing if you think about it,” said Dillner.
What began as a simple postal mix-up ended with a moment of recognition and celebration, a moment that honored a woman whose life has spanned generations and story continues to inspire. Scan the QR Code to watch the video report!
