Douglass shuts out Remington behind three touchdowns from Carter Green

BY CHARLES CHANEY

DOUGLASS, Kan.—Some games get remembered for the score. Others are remembered for the player who took over. Friday night in Douglass, the season opener was all about Carter Green.

The junior running back, the reigning Class 3A state champion wrestler, powered the Bulldogs to an 18-0 victory over Remington, scoring all three touchdowns while piling up 193 rushing yards on just 14 carries. He added an interception return, a fumble recovery and a short-yardage clincher in the fourth quarter, giving Douglass its first shutout since 2022.

Green wasted no time setting the tone. On just his second carry of the game he blasted through the line and raced 89 yards for a touchdown. It was the kind of play that shows why arm tackles don’t work against the junior.

From there, Green kept finding ways to change the game. In the second quarter, he stepped in front of a pass and returned it 10 yards for another score. Minutes later, he jumped on a loose ball after a botched handoff in the Bronco backfield, ending another possession before it started. By halftime, Douglass led 12-0, and Green had already stolen the show.

The conditions didn’t help either offense. A steady rain in the first half made the ball slick and the footing unpredictable. Even after the skies cleared by halftime, rhythm was hard to come by. Penalties added to the stop-and-start flow as Douglass was flagged 15 times for 105 yards. While Remington was hit with 11 for 100.

The fourth quarter turned into a defensive stalemate. Douglass was stopped near the goal line after a long interception return, while Remington came up empty on a fourth down following a deep drop. Finally, with 3:24 to play, Green finished the night the same way he started it by finding the end zone, this time on a 2-yard plunge to seal the 18-0 win.

Aside from Green’s big night, Douglass finished with 226 rushing yards. Hunter West added 18 yards on 12 carries, and Charlie Kielhorn chipped in 12 on six attempts. Quarterback Kane Ast was limited to 25 yards on 2-of-11 passing with one interception.

Remington managed 132 rushing yards on 35 attempts, led by quarterback Pius Graf’s 78 on 16 carries. Graf also threw for 92 yards, completing 10 of 25 passes but tossing two interceptions. Elliott Hochstetler was his top target with five catches for 45 yards.

For Douglass, it wasn’t a perfect opener but Green’s ability to create plays on both sides of the ball outweighed the mistakes. He looked every bit like the multi-sport star who already owns a state wrestling crown, only this time his dominance came on the football field.

Douglass (1-0) now heads to Marion, which blanked the Bulldogs 28-0 last season. Remington (0-1) travels to Bennington, where the Broncos rolled 61-22 a year ago.
