AUGUSTA, Kansas. — After playing two of the best teams in Kansas on the road, Augusta was ready to be home.
It only took two plays to show much they love the friendly confines of Hillier Stadium.
Owen Roberts who slipped through the hands of one defender after making one miss and raced off for a touchdown and the Orioles would never look back.
Augusta beat Winfield, 40-0 on Friday to pick up their first win of the year.
The Orioles improved to 1-2 on the year with the win.
Roberts’ touchdown was the first of many to come for the Orioles. It was a year ago to the day they went to Winfield and lost Cade Camac to an injury at QB and Brody Haskell would eventually step in to his new position. Whatever it takes to win for Haskell. Whether it’s wide receiver, running back, kicking or even QB. He just wants to win.
That’s what the Orioles did on Friday night.
Jackson Ingram was able to run it in on a third and goal from the one to make it 14-0 Orioles. It was the second possession where Augusta started near midfield. The Augusta defense helped force a quick 3-and-out on Winfield’s previous possession.
Augusta then went to work. It was Roberts and Haskell running the RPO. Then, Haskell hit Ingram on a mesh over the middle for a gain of 12, pushing it into the red zone. Roberts 15 yard run put it down to the 2-yard line. Ingram would finish off the drive to put the Orioles up 14-0 with 2:14 remaining in the first quarter.
Just when Winfield had some momentum, it was Rylee McMichael coming up with the big interception and returning it to the Winfield 34-yard line.
The defense once again held Winfield and forced them to punt right before half. Haskell would go to work, with a nice dash of his feet, finding Owen Roberts on the ground and Brecken Albert in the air. They’d cap off a drive right before halftime as Haskell found Ingram on a slip pass and it was 20-0 Orioles heading into the break.
Right out of halftime, Augusta took care of business once again. This time, Haskell found Albert on a post route and there was nothing but daylight ahead of him. It looked similar to the play he scored against Buhler. The touchdown put the Orioles up 27-0 with 10:47 to go in the third.
It was the defense once again, shining. They held Winfield in the third on a fourth-and-goal at the 4-yard line. It was Camac blasting through the line untouched and was able to take down Kellen Gibson for the big loss and ending any scoring threat from the Vikings (0-3).
Roberts then made Winfield for trying to arm tackle him. He broke a couple of arm tackles and raced 91 yards for the touchdown on the first play from scrimmage and Augusta was cruising up 34-0.
Jaydyn Harris would punch in a 3-yard score in the fourth quarter for the cherry on top.
Augusta piled up 403 yards of offense and held Winfield to only 186. Augusta would force two turnovers and have multiple fourth down stands.
Roberts finished with 185 yards on nine carries and had two touchdowns. Albert had three catches for 114 yards and the touchdown.
Haskell had 161 passing yards and added another 29 on the ground and zero turnovers.
Camac led the oriole defense with a sack and six tackles. Sophomore Drew bourn had two sacks and Gunner Carey had another one. Ingram had two touchdowns, one rushing and one passing. He also had a fumble recovery and four tackles.
The Orioles now will host 10th-ranked Mulvane on Friday night. They’re led by Manny Myers and are coming off a win over Circle.
