On this year’s Memorial Day, the El Dorado American Legion Post 81 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1174 will hold a joint ceremony to dedicate a special American Flag.

Memorial Day, a federal holiday established in 1868, is held the last Monday in the month of May. The day is recognized for mourning and honoring deceased service men and women. Many cities and communities across the nation have historically held parades in their downtowns and ceremonies at cemeteries to honor those fallen. Towns generally decorate the town with flags or “in memory of” light pole flags that feature a different service man or woman one each light pole.

Each year the El Dorado American Legion Post 81 and Veterans of Foreign Wars 1174 jointly host a Memorial Day Program, each year being different. This year is special with the dedication of a bronze Tactile Braille American Flag.

The flag was created to honor blind veterans and other blind Americans. The flag shows as it would for the sighted, but with braille descriptions on the flag, explaining the flag’s features. The braille flag will be dedicated on behalf of George and Theresa Fagg.

The dedication will take place on Memorial Day, May 26, 2025 at Sunset Lawns Cemetery beginning at 11am. The Sunset Lawns Cemetery is located at 2100 Sunset Rd in El Dorado.
