After a quiet resignation following the Class 5A state tournament, Andover had to find a replacement for Martin Shetlar.
The Trojans have their man.
Andover has selected Trey O’Neil as the next head basketball coach and he’s no stranger to leading a powerful team.
He takes over at a very successful stint at Hugoton where he led the Eagles the last four seasons. During his time in Hugoton, O’Neil led them to the 2023 state championship for the first time. The Eagles almost went back-to-back before losing to McPherson in overtime in the 2024 title game. Over his four years in Hugoton, they made the state tournament three times. He was 74-22 during his four seasons.
Prior to Hugoton, he was an assistant coach at Hays High for two seasons.
O’Neil graduated from Fort Hays State and from Scott Community High School. While in High school, he helped Scott City win three consecutive state titles from 2011-2013.
He was the KSHSAA Covered coach of the year in 2023, as well as a Sports in Kansas finalists in 2022-2024.
Shetlar resigns after eight seasons and has turned the Trojans into a 5A powerhouse and a regular contender at the state tournament. He led the Trojans to their first state championship in 2022 and then three consecutive state championships over the last three seasons. He also had an undefeated season that was cut short in 2020.
Andover is coming off a very successful 20-5 season and should return a bulk of their scoring from this season, leaving them to once again be one of the best teams in Class 5A.
