Lois Cox, 98, passed from this life to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, June 4, 2022 in her home, the Cox farm, Augusta, Kansas.
Angenetta Lois Olsen Cox was born on March 16, 1924, on this same farm (at the time belonged to her grandfather, Robert Lee Ralston), near Augusta, Kansas, to Carl Olsen and Tylitha Ralston Olsen. Lois graduated from Augusta High School in 1941. She obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Education at University of Missouri-Kansas City and her Master’s Degree in Counseling at University of Arizona.
On December 30, 1941, she married Rev. Henry W. Cox Jr. and they raised five children: LeRoy, Annetta, John Henry, David, and Robert. Lois was a pastor’s wife as she served alongside her husband who was a Southern Baptist pastor from 1947 until his retirement in 1990. In the early years of marriage, she was a housewife and mother. She served well as pastor’s wife and Sunday School teacher. She had worked in various jobs through the years, including Hallmark Cards in Kansas City. Henry and Lois had served together as pastor and pastor’s wife at: Splitlog Baptist in Splitlog, MO; Enterprise Baptist in Enterprise, OK; First Baptist in Boynton, OK; First Baptist in Douglass, KS; Metropolitan Southern Baptist in Kansas City, KS; Rancho Grande Southern Baptist in Casa Grande, AZ; First Southern Baptist in Ash Fork, AZ; and I.X.L. Southern Baptist in Arkansas City, KS.
Lois began as a teacher in elementary school at age 40, and taught for 27 years before retiring in 1989/1990 in: Kansas City, KS; Casa Grande, AZ; Chino Valley, AZ; Ash Fork, AZ; and Arkansas City, KS. She was a Sunday School teacher at various times through the years for children, youth, and adults.
She enjoyed farm life as a child, gardening, Bible Study, teaching, writing, and moreso she enjoyed ministering to people and serving her Lord. For fun, she enjoyed playing Scrabble with family members that she could convince to play. In her retirement years, she was a Sunday School teacher for adults at First Baptist Church in Douglass, Kansas for many years until she chose to step down in 2020 at age 96. She enjoyed traveling for a time. She was a published author with 2 books about her childhood years, “Angel on Assignment Volume 1: The Adventures Begin” and “Angel on Assignment: Vol. 2 Assignment Continues,” and other previous works.
During her retirement, she resided on the Cox farm near Augusta, Kansas. Henry passed away in 2016, they were married 74 years.
Lois was preceded in death by her parents Carl and Tylitha Olsen; her half-brothers Carl Olsen Jr., George Olsen, and Richard Olsen; her husband Rev. Henry W. Cox Jr.; her eldest son Elward LeRoy Cox; and her grandson Brian David Cox. Lois is survived by: daughter, Annetta L. Cox of Gurnee, IL; sons John Henry (Cynthia) Cox of New York City, NY; David (Carol) Cox of Ash Fork, AZ; and Robert Cox of Augusta, KS; David’s children: Lois’s grandson Kevin (Samantha) Cox and Lois’s granddaughter Kaitlyn Cox; Kevin’s 4 children: Lois’s great-grandchildren Emmalee, Madilyn, Wyatt, and Benjamin; LeRoy’s family: Lois’s 2 grandchildren and 3 greatgrandchildren; many family members, friends, and church family.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, June 10 at the Dunsford Funeral Home in Augusta, KS. Funeral services will be Saturday, June 11, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Douglass, KS and will be officiated by Rev. Voyt Lynn. Interment will be at the Douglass Cemetery following the service.
