Andover Central entered Friday night’s 4A regional matchup at Goddard with confidence that they could compete with the Lions, since the first matchup between the two teams was decided in overtime. In week three, Goddard came out on top by a score of 17-16.

The Jaguars and Lions battled again on Friday night, but this time Goddard pulled away in the second half for a 21-7 regional win, ending Andover Central’s season.

Goddard received the opening kick and marched down the field, piecing together a 12-play drive to score on their first possession.

With two minutes remaining in the opening quarter, Andover Central tied the game with a 12-yard touchdown pass on third down. Shomari Parnell heaved the ball to the end zone where Xavier Bell was able to come down with the ball after it took a deflection.

Early in the second quarter, Goddard was able to force a fumble inside Andover Central territory. A few plays later the Lions attempted a field goal, but the kick was blocked by the Jaguars, keeping the score tied at 7.

On Central’s final drive of the half, the Jaguars quickly moved the ball into the red zone with the chance to take the lead, but Goddard came up with an interception in the end zone to keep the game tied at 7 going into halftime.

The Goddard defense was the story of the second half. Central was able to manage just one first down in the entire second half as the Lions dominated the line of scrimmage and brought pressure on Central quarterback Shomari Parnell for the remainder of the night.

Goddard scored on their first possession of the second half. After a 40-yard pass, the Lions scored on a five-yard touchdown pass to take a 14-7 lead just two minutes into the second half. The Lions added to their lead on their next possession on a three-yard touchdown run to go up 21-7 with 7:25 remaining in the third quarter. Both defenses continued to get stops as both punters were busy for the remainder of the contest, and Goddard was able to hold on and end the Jaguars season.

With the loss, Andover Central finishes the 2018 season with a record of 5-5. Goddard impress to 8-2 and will advance to take on the Wellington Crusaders (8-2) next Friday night in a 4A sectional matchup at Wellington High School.
