The Andover volleyball team finished their season with a trip to the 5A state tournament on Friday at Tony’s Pizza Events Center in Salina. The Trojans finished pool play with a record of 1-2 and were unable to advance to the semifinals on Saturday. The Trojans have played in the 5A state tournament the last two seasons and failed to make it out of pool play both seasons.

Including the two losses at state, Andover finished with a record of 36-6. Andover also finished the season undefeated in the always-tough AVCTL II,

First-year head coach Holly Avalos expressed how proud she was of her team’s achievements this season.

“We were undefeated in a tough league, won two tournaments, hosted sub state and won sub-state. you can't not be proud of that. Although we were disappointed not to make day two, they played their hearts out. I told them in the locker room how proud of them I was,” said Avalos.

Andover opened the state tournament with a loos to St. Thomas Aquinas by a score of 25-15, 25-23. The Trojans bounced back with a win over Newton by a score of 25-15, 25-18. Finally, Andover was eliminated following a loss to Lansing by a score of 25-15, 25-18.

“We need to work on speeding up our game and seeing tougher competition during the regular season,” said Avalos.

“We know exactly what we need to do to be there again next year.”
