There was no shortage of medals won by Butler County runners at Thursday’s AVCTL III meet in McPherson.
On the boys side, El Dorado’s Ezekiel Kemboi took home a league championship, finishing with a time of 16:17.
“Obviously he is having a great season,” said El Dorado head coach Dave Herrs.
“It began this summer with his dedication to getting summer mileage in, and that hard work is paying off for him. He is fun to watch run, especially at the end of the race with his finishing kick.”
El Dorado senior Christian Price also earned a medal with a fifth-place finish at 17:11. Jeremiah Kemboi finished with a time of 17:53 to place 15th. Adam Haines and Walt Jensen both finished in the top 20 as well. Haines finished 17th with a time of 17:57, while Jensen took 20th in 18:17.
“Our six-team AVCTL Division III race contained three of the top four 4A teams in Kansas, according to the rankings. This race had many talented runners, we knew we would have to run quite well in order to contend,” added Herrs.
“As we head toward the regional meet next weekend, I hope our boys team is encouraged about their chance to perform. I think we can be competitive at that meet.”
The Circle boys team is the defending 4A state champion and finished third in one of the toughest leagues in the state.
Eli Jacobson was the first Thunderbird to cross the finish line with a time of 17:24 to take eighth. Emmet Keller finished just two seconds behind Jacobson for a ninth place finish. Ryan Derry finished 12th with a time of 17:48. Simeon Keller and Bryson Schoenhoffer both finished in the top 20 at 18th and 19th, respectively. Both El Dorado and Circle were able to place five runners in the top 20.
Augusta freshman Sawyer Schmidt was impressive in his first league meet at the high school level. Schmidt took third overall with a time of 16:50. Augusta’s Brice Helton also earned a medal with a sixth-place finish for the Orioles at 17:15. Jacob Deiter finished 16th with a time of 17:54.
On the Girls side, Circle finished as the runner-up. Emma Willour took fourth overall for the T-Birds with a time of 21:00. Katie Webb and Bethany Choriego also finished in the top 20. Webb finished 12th, while Choriego placed 14th.
