After a successful regional tournament in Independence on Monday, the El Dorado girls tennis team will send three athletes to the 4A state meet in Topeka this weekend.

Nailer Payton finished fourth with a record of 2-2 to qualify for the state meet, while the doubles team of Kaylah Jackson and Makayla Chabot also finished 2-2 and qualified with a sixth-place finish.

Payton started out with two dominant wins, defeating Jadeyn Wyrick of Labette County 6-0, 6-0 before taking down Allie Utley of Iola by a score of 6-2, 6-0. After her 2-0 start, Payton fell to the regional champion, Piper Marquez of Independence in three sets, before losing her final match to Ally Hicks of Parsons in two sets.

Jackson and Chabot began the tournament with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Iola, before falling to Parsons in two sets in their second match. The Wildcats bounced back and won their next set before losing their final match to Chanute.

“It’s been a couple of years since we have sent anyone to state, but these girls have worked hard to achieve that goal,” said El Dorado head coach Kent Kunkel.

“The whole team seemed to peak at the right time this year.”

The 4A meet is scheduled for Oct. 12-13 and will take place at the Kossover Tennis Center in Topeka.
