Despite out-gaining Winfield in total yards of offense, El Dorado turned the ball over four times and lost by a score of 28-12 on the road Friday night.
The Wildcats and Vikings both entered the game with two wins and three losses.
After a scoreless first quarter, El Dorado’s Braden Morgan scored on a six-yard run to give El Dorado their first, and only lead of the game late in the second quarter. After a failed two-point try, Winfield received the kickoff and quickly marched the ball down the field, scoring on a 41-yard touchdown pass to give Winfield a 7-6 lead at the half.
Winfield scored again on a short touchdown run with 5:30 left in the first quarter to put the Vikings up 14-6. Winfield scored again on a 42-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter, making it 21 unanswered by the Vikings.
El Dorado responded with another short touchdown run by Braden Morgan with six minutes left in the game, but would not be able to get within one possession as the Vikings scored again in the final minute to finish off the Wildcats.
El Dorado won the time of possession battle, and finished with 338 yards of offense, compared to Winfield’s 306. El Dorado also finished with five more first downs than Winfield. Despite all these numbers, turnovers killed the Wildcats. El Dorado turned the ball over four times on two interceptions and two fumbles, killing any momentum they were building.
Braden Morgan had another phenomenal night with 252 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Morgan also broke 200 yards last week in the Wildcats win over Circle. Cody Wittenberg also added 48 yards on the ground. Kai Wernli led El Dorado with one catch for 26 yards.
El Dorado falls to 2-4 on the season and will take on Mulvane (4-2) at home on Friday, Oct. 12.
