The Circle volleyball team finished 3-2, and took fifth place at the Arkansas City tournament on Saturday, Sept. 8.
The Thunderbirds battled with Wichita Northwest to open pool play. Circle won the first set 25-21, before dropping the final two sets by scores of 25-21 and 25-23.
“Our opening three-set loss to Northwest was disappointing, as it kept us from qualifying for the championship round,” explained Nibarger.
“I think if we had played them later in the day, the result might have been different.”
Circle bound back, beating Winfield 25-14, 25-13.
The Thunderbirds faced the home team in their third match, and came out on top over Ark City in three sets. After losing to Andover Central in two sets, the Thunderbirds faced Mulvane in the fifth-place match. Circle only needed two sets to defeat Mulvane (25-16, 25-14) to claim fifth place.
Circle freshman Tatum Boettjer led the team with 33 kills. Mallory Cowman finished with 21 kills and added 12 blocks. Jessie Nibarger finished the tournament with 93 assists.
Circle is now 6-3 on the season, with all three losses coming against 5A and 6A opponents.
