The Bluestem volleyball team traveled to Independence to take on the Bulldogs and the Cherryvale Chargers Tuesday night. The Lions opened the night with a three-set loss to Independence, a team that was in the 4A-I state tournament last fall. The Lions started out with a 25-15 loss before showing their resilience with a 25-17 win in the second set. The Bulldogs won the third set by a score of 25-19. Despite the loss, Bluestem junior Paiton Haga broke a school record for digs in a match with 27.
The Lions bounced back to beat Cherryvale in two sets, 25-21 and 25-17.
Bluestem, who came into the season ranked No. 7 in 2A, are now 3-3 on the season. The Lions three losses have come against two other teams ranked in the top 10 in 2A and Independence, a team that qualified for the 4A-I state tournament last fall.
Bluestem will look to get back above .500 on Saturday, Sept. 8 as the Lions will compete at the Flinthills tournament.
