Since the start of the El Dorado soccer program in 2015, the Wildcats had gone winless until last season, when they finished with three wins. After losing seven seniors, the Wildcats will only return three starters from last season.
“One of the biggest changes we will face this year is just adjusting to losing seven senior starters,” said head coach Jason Williams.
“Even though those kids didn't have much soccer experience, they were very competitive and were all good leaders. So a big challenge for us will be figuring out who will take over and fall into that leadership role.”
Senior captain Dalton King is the only returning senior starter for the Wildcats, and will provide leadership at the center back position. Sophomores Jett Roberts and Alex Craig played valuable minutes as freshmen last season, and will be valuable returners for the Wildcats this season.
“We will have a lot of new faces out there this year,” said Williams.
Williams is excited to see what Ryan Huss can accomplish in goal this year. Williams also singled out Ryan Haag in the midfield as someone who will take the next step this season.
“Both put in a lot of work this summer and have improved a ton. They are super excited to get things going.”
Three wins may not seem like much, but the Wildcats were thrilled with the results last year. With a program that has so little experience, El Dorado has already come a long way and is working to keep growing the program.
“I remember when I met the seniors from last year who started this thing as freshmen. It truly was their first time playing the game... and to be winning games now is huge. The kids have bought in and are really working hard to get better every time out,” said Williams.
El Dorado will kick off the season on the road at Mulvane at 6:30 PM on Tuesday, Aug. 28.
