The Douglass volleyball team will have plenty of experience heading into this season, as the Bulldogs will have eight seniors on the roster. Six of those seniors were on the varsity squad last season, and three of them have already signed to play at the next level.
Leanna Braddy is entering her 13th season as head coach at Douglass High School, and has built a strong reputation for the program. The Bulldogs finished 25-9 last season, and have averaged just six losses per season over the last four years.
“For the most part, everyone on the team has had some sort of varsity experience,” said head coach Leanna Braddy.
“This group of seniors has participated in almost year-round volleyball since they were in middle school.”
Katelyn Moore, a University of Central Missouri signee, was one of the best volleyball players in the state last season. Moore was a second team All-State outside hitter in class 3A as a junior.
Jansyn Schamahorn, a Butler signee, and Greely Monroe, a Fort Scott CC signee, will also play huge roles in the success of the Bulldogs this season. Seniors Hailey Stiner, Amber Scharff, and Jaysi Mertz all had starting roles as juniors last season. Jaydin Desylva, a junior, also contributed to the team’s success last season as a sophomore.
This group of girls continued to improve this summer, playing in tournaments at Butler Community College, Friends University, and Branson, MO.
“We played some great competition, and a lot of them were bigger schools than us,” said Braddy.
“The three things I would like for the team to improve on is blocking, communication, and being more consistent on playing smarter and making good choices during matches. We need to make sure that they remember no one can play perfect. They put a lot of pressure on themselves to always be on top of their game.”
The Bulldogs will begin their season on Tuesday, August 28 at Flinthills High School.
