The Augusta girls basketball team defended their home court on Tuesday night as they defeated Mulvane 41-26 in front of a large crowd on homecoming night.
After a slow first half, the Orioles led by just three. Jayden Marlnee scored six her team-high 14 points in the third quarter to help increase Augusta’s lead to six going into the fourth quarter.
The Augusta defense shut down Mulvane in the final quarter, allowing the Wildcats to score just one point as Augusta was able to earn a 41-26 home victory.
Jayden Marlnee led the Orioles with 14. Abbee Rhodes scored 13.
“I thought we executed very well offensively. We were patient and got great looks,” said Augusta head coach Tracy Anderson.
“Although we didn't shoot the ball well from the outside, we had wide open looks and got some timely offensive boards. Madison Wheeler struggled from the field shooting wise, but she was all over the floor defensively and had six steals. She also was very unselfish with the ball and got us easy points in the paint. We need to continue improving our weaknesses these last five regular season games to set us up for a sub-state run.”
The Orioles will get a chance to compete again at Winfield on Friday, Feb. 9 with tip-off scheduled for 6 p.m.
