Augusta faced Gardner-Edgerton in the first round of the Lady Cat Classic tournament on Thursday night at El Dorado High School.
Augusta jumped out to a 7-2 lead, but the Trailblazers rallied to tie it up at 10 at the end of the first quarter.
Gardner-Edgerton scored the first 11 points of the second quarter, before Augusta went on a run of their own, scoring seven straight points. Augusta went into halftime trailing by five as the Trailblazers led 26-19.
“I was happy with our first half,” said Augusta head coach Tracy Anderson.
“We were in it even though our leading scorer, Abbee Rhodes, only had one point in the half. I thought if we could get her some touches we'd be okay.”
Unfortunately the Orioles only scored two points in the third quarter, and eight in the fourth as the Jaguars dominated the second half, outscoring Augsuta 25-10 to earn a 51-29 win.
“The third quarter killed us,” said Anderson.
“We were impatient and soft with the ball. It was a very very physical game and we stopped attacking. We knew we'd have to play our best game and we really competed for about two and a half quarters. They are a strong and aggressive defensive team and if you don't take care of the ball for four quarters, they are going to make you pay and we did.”
Jayden Marlnee led the Orioles with nine points. Abbee Rhodes scored five. Maddie Livingston, Madison Wheeler, and Jadyn Jackson each added four.
