Eight schools in the AVCTL III-IV competed at the league meet hosted by Wichita Collegiate at Riverside Tennis Tennis on Monday, Oct. 2. The host team scored 68 points to take first place. Wellington took second with 53 points. McPherson was four points behind them with 49 points.
The Circle Thunderbirds took fourth place with 45 points on the day.
El Dorado finished in seventh place with 12 points. Nalea Payton finished 1-2 to take seventh place in the No. 1 doubles tournament. After dropping her first two matches, she defeated Olivia Richardson of Augusta 9-3.
In the No. 1 doubles tournament, Abby Edwards and Gretchen Shum also placed seventh. The pair lost their first two matches before beating Malm/Stieven of Augusta 9-4.
“We placed seventh out of eight teams but this year the league was the toughest from top to bottom than I had seen before.” said El Dorado head coach Kent Kunkel.
“Our league is extremely tough with both Wichita Collegiate and McPherson ranked first and third in 4A, while several others will make some noise at the state meet.”
The Wildcats will have their work cut out for them as they travel to Wichita Collegiate to compete at Regionals on Friday and Saturday with the top six going to state on Oct 13-14.
