CHANUTE—Augusta’s football game at Chanute didn’t exactly start the way the Orioles would’ve liked. But it certainly ended with an emphatic statement.

After Chanute tied the game 14-14 with 5:41 left in regulation, the Orioles produced maybe their most signature drive of the season yet. They marched 83 yards down the field on eight plays and took 2:36 off the clock. Ceetyn Anderson punched in the go-ahead game-winning score with a six-yard touchdown run. The Orioles fended off a desperate drive by Chanute that ended around midfield, and they held on for a 20-14 victory. The win moves the Orioles to 4-1 on the season.

The Comets struck first when Lane Harvey came up with an interception and ran 43 yards the other way for a pick six to get Chanute on the board first.

Only four minutes later, Chance Whitehead capped an 11-play, 68-yard drive for the Orioles with a five-yard touchdown run. The Orioles missed the extra point, however—something with which they’ve had a few struggles this season—as the Comets led 7-6.

Late in the second quarter, Whitehead scored his second rushing touchdown of the game with 26 seconds left to give the Orioles some momentum going into the locker room at halftime. Anderson punched in the 2-point conversion to give Augusta a 14-7 lead.

After a scoreless third quarter, Chanute put together a long, 73-yard drive that was capped by a 22-yard touchdown run to tie the game in the fourth. But that set up the Orioles’ statement drive to end the game.

Augusta out-rushed Chanute 217-67 and had a slight 78-66 advantage in passing yards. Anderson led all rushers with 82 yards on just 10 carries as he gave the Orioles a big lift in his return from an injury that sidelined him a couple games.

Whitehead finished with 51 rushing yards. Tyler Smith added 43 on nine carries. Colton Barnett added 26 on five carries.

Justin Clausing led the Orioles with 28 receiving yards on two grabs.

Augusta finished with three turnovers to Chanute’s two. The Orioles committed 11 penalties for 81 yards. The Orioles nearly doubled Chanute’s time of possession (29:51-18:09).

Smith led the Orioles with seven tackles. Jonny Clausing had six tackles. Jake Swink had a sack for Augusta.
