Though it’s only a preseason tournament, Augusta’s volleyball team didn’t have the hottest start at the Winfield Invitational this past Saturday.

The Orioles finished with just one win in five matches.

They actually started their day with a strong first-set win over Andale, which finished the day 5-0. The Orioles were the only team to take a set off the Indians the entire tournament. Andale bounced back to win the match in three sets 22-25, 25-14, 25-11.

Augusta followed with another three-set match against Conway Springs. All three sets were close, but the Orioles gritted out a 25-23, 24-26, 25-23 victory.

The Orioles had some good moments the rest of the day, but were unable to string enough of them together for another victory. Trinity beat them 25-8, 25-21. Collegiate won in a close match 25-22, 25-21. The Orioles closed the day with another three-setter, but Chanute prevailed 23-25, 25-11, 25-21.

Andale, Trinity and El Dorado all finished 5-0 on the day. Buhler and Collegiate were the only other teams to finish with a winning record (3-2 each). Chanute and Wellington both finished with one win each while Winfield was winless.
