Andover’s volleyball team got off to a strong start against good competition during Saturday’s preseason tournament in Hutchinson.

The Trojans won their first matches of the tournament before suffering their first loss. They closed the way with two more wins to finish 5-1.

Andover started with a 25-23, 25-15 win over the always-tough McPherson Bullpups. They then handled Dodge City with ease in a 25-17, 25-19 win. Andover then beat Campus easily 25-15, 25-18.

The Trojans ran into the powerhouse Goddard Lions, who are one of the state’s best. Andover came close in both sets, but ultimately came up short in a 21-25, 24-26 loss.

Andover bounced back by edging Maize in a narrow first set on way to a 25-22, 25-15 straight-set win. The Trojans closed the day with a 25-8, 25-20 win over Eisenhower.
