Errors plagued the El Dorado softball team in Winfield on Thursday night. The Wildcats put up a valiant effort in game one, but lost a nail biter 6-5 before losing the second game 12-1 in five innings as Winfield swept the Wildcats.
Winfield opened game one with four runs in the first inning and took a 5-0 lead in the second. El Dorado scored their first run of the game in the top of the third to make it 5-1. Both teams battled as El Dorado was able to get hits, but couldn’t manage to score much in the first six innings.
In the top of the seventh inning, the Wildcats trailed 6-3. Marissa Eaton led off the inning with a single followed by singles from Annalise Young and Jillian McCaig. Mccain’s single scored Eaton to cut the deficit to two. Sydney Harper put the ball in play to score Young and make it 6-5 with one out and the tying run on first. The next two Wildcats both grounded out however, and Winfield escaped with the 6-5 win in game one. El Dorado out-hit Winfield 10-6, but could not overcome the seven errors they committed defensively.
Marissa Eaton led the Wildcats with three hits. Jillian McCaig and Annalise Young added two hits each. Mccain also pitched game one and struck out five Vikings.
In game two, Winfield dominated the first two innings again, outscoring El Dorado 7-1. El Dorado’s only run of the game came in the second inning when Sydney Harper hit a single that brought Mikala Ruff home from second base. This was also El Dorado’s only hit of the game. The Vikings continued to score until they scored their 12th run and the game was ended in the fifth inning due to the run rule. Winfield’s freshman pitcher Aleigha Gale pitched a one-hitter in five innings for the Vikings.
El Dorado falls to 3-7 with the pair of losses and will look to rebound as the Wildcats will host Augusta on Thursday, April 27.
